AI Overview

AI Overview is a feature in Google Search that generates an AI-produced summary at the top of search results. Because AI Overviews are powered by the same underlying signals as Google Gemini, optimizing for Gemini AEO and optimizing for AI Overviews are effectively the same effort.

Full Definition

AI Overview is Google's label for the AI-generated response block that appears at the top of many search results pages. Introduced as part of Google's Search Generative Experience and subsequently rolled out broadly, AI Overviews synthesize information from multiple sources into a single summary answer, displayed before any traditional organic results.

For B2B marketers, AI Overview is significant for two reasons. First, it captures attention before any organic listing, which means brands not appearing in the Overview are effectively invisible for that query. Second, it is powered by the same signals and infrastructure as Google Gemini, meaning there is no separate optimization track for AI Overviews.

A company that earns inclusion in Gemini responses will, in most cases, also earn inclusion in AI Overviews for the same queries. The reverse is also true: content that is too thin, too promotional, or too poorly structured to surface in Gemini will not appear in AI Overviews either.

This convergence simplifies the AEO task. Rather than maintaining separate strategies for AI assistants and AI-enhanced search, B2B marketers can focus on a single foundation: authoritative, well-structured content that answers the questions buyers are actually asking. That foundation serves both channels simultaneously.
