Citation Rate

The percentage of prompts where a company is explicitly cited as a source in the AI-generated response. Citation Rate measures a deeper level of AI visibility than Inclusion Rate: the model is not just mentioning the company but attributing information to it as a credible source.

Full Definition

Citation Rate is the percentage of prompts in a defined prompt set where a company is explicitly cited as a source in the AI-generated response.

It measures a deeper level of AI visibility than Inclusion Rate. Being mentioned means the model knows a company exists in a given context. Being cited means the model considers the company a credible enough source to attribute information to it. Citation is a stronger authority signal and a more durable form of AI visibility.

Citation behavior varies significantly across platforms. Gemini cites sources frequently, often linking to specific pages. ChatGPT cites sources less consistently, particularly for responses drawn primarily from its training data rather than real-time retrieval. Perplexity cites sources on nearly every response as a core product feature.

To improve Citation Rate, a company needs content that AI models can find, parse, and attribute: well-structured pages with clear authorship, original data or frameworks, schema markup that identifies entities and definitions, and a body of work that third parties reference. Citation Rate tends to improve as a lagging indicator, following improvements in content quality and third-party authority.
